FOR TEAM OLD LADY: Colouring Shot 93, 94 & 96

For the last few days, I've been colouring shots 93 & 96. Both shots contained all three characters' from the film so I separated them to save time.
Pictured: Shots 93 & 96
I coloured shot 94 before but forgot to post it. Emma (the director) created the photograph square pictures and I skewed them individually onto the photo-strip, it only lasted a few frames before Edith's hand flips it so it wasn't that much work.

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 96 [LINED]

The lined version of shot 96, where every character in the film is walking! Here's the rough version of the shot: http://whey-an.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/for-team-old-lady-shot-96-rough.html where they're all together.

I've split up the 3 characters in different files so I wouldn't have to erase things (when characters overlap) and also so the files can be sent to different colourists and not just one.
Also, I've put the characters' walk cycles on a loop. So, instead of moving the characters in flash (see rough version link above^) we can colour the characters and then move them in AE or premier (and repeat the walk cycle).

Edith's actions were a little more difficult to figure out. Whilst the couple don't do anything else besides walking, Edith has actions before and after her walk cycle.
According to the original time (see rough version link^), Edith walks nine steps. Again, it would cost too much time to move in flash and then colour in photoshop. So instead I've split the files into 3 - the first action where she stares at them; the walk cycle (on a loop) ; the last action where she reaches for her bag.

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 22 [LINED]

Emma (the director) added more time at the end so Edith's head movement isn't so swift, this shot is now 110 frames.

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 93 [LINED]

Inbetweened and lined Shot 93, Edith took the most time to do because she has the most movement and I had to figure out the physics of her hair and the bag's strap.
Inbetweened pass

Cleaned and erased overlapping lines, also added buttons and her flower

FOR TEAM VELOETOILE: SHOT 66 Version 04 [FINAL]

Realised I forgot to post this a while back, it's already been rendered but I'm just placing the playblast here as proof!

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 79 [LINED]

Because I'd already animated (and lined) shot 81, this was quite quick to do because I just reused the frames - just like the process of shot 17 that I did for Team Colourless in the previous post.

Thursday 14 May 2015

FOR TEAM COLOURLESS: SHOT 17 [KEYED]

The keyed version of Shot 17, I've inbetweened the lady already so only Bianca needs to be inbetweened. In the original animatic, she wasn't this far away from the bench so I had to have her step back a few steps to sit back down which added more time. To save time, I reused a lot of Bianca's poses from Shot 15 - so unlike my other shots, which usually involves a messy stickman drawing to figure out the action, I roughed this shot out as I went along.

FOR TEAM COLOURLESS: SHOT 15 [KEYED]

The green box represents the camera that will move along with her, so everything outside the green box is irrelevant. Here is the shot with the chart for the inbetweeners:

without the charts
The biggest issue after I roughed it was that I had to animate with Bianca's proportions and make sure the character design was correct. Also, making sure that Bianca and the lady are the same height (which I referenced from the height chart that Sara made).

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 94 [LINED]

Edith turns the photo-strip around so I added rough pictures of the front (in blue), makes it less confusing.
I don't know what the photo-strip is supposed to look like so I've can't draw a proper one in.

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 08 [LINED]

I had a bit of trouble with her hair, just trying to think about how bouncy it should or shouldn't be... It was quite bouncy before but I decided to keep it subtle.

Rough of shot 08 can be seen here: http://whey-an.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/for-team-old-lady-shots-06-08-roughs.html

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 25 [LINED]

Lined and inbetweened, the bus is a symbol thats been animated with a motion tween. I wasn't sure if the glass was transparent or not so I animated her when the bus passes anyway, just in case.

Rough version of the shot here: http://whey-an.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/for-team-old-lady-shot-25-layout-and.html

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 95 [LINED]

Properly lined and, also, inbetweened. I took out the action of Fred letting go of the curtain because I incorporated that into shot 92 already.

The rough version is here: http://whey-an.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/for-team-old-lady-shot-95-rough.html

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 93 [ROUGH] Version02

I added more animation on the couple, I took Charlotte's suggestion to make them step back (almost in shock). At first, I did it in sync with the both of them stepping back (like how they were in the shot 92) but then I felt it looked a bit strange so I've added a bit of variety with Fred stepping back but Helen reaching out to help when Edith wobbles a bit - Helen's arms reaching out also leads into the next shot nicely.
Previous version of the shot is here: http://whey-an.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/for-team-old-lady-shot-93-rough.html

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SCENE 04 - SHOT 04 [LINED]

New version, I've delayed the hair and realised the flower was on the wrong side so I altered that!

With the bush (substitute) added
The lined version of this shot, my first lined shot so I had a few difficulties drawing neat again...

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 94 [ROUGH]

46  frames
There's a lot of hand movement going on, it quite difficult to observe in edith's (blue) left hand but she has the photo between her thumb and other fingers and kind of drops it when she turns her hand.

FOR TEAM VELOETOILE: SHOT 68 Version 03 [FINAL]

Very short clip, 106 frames - again, with added cloth animation. The blue colour is only a substitute, instead of importing the blanket, I created a new ncloth then rested it in it's shape. I used quite a lot of clusters for this shot because I wanted the feeling of the blanket moving alongside his body movement.

FOR TEAM VELOETOILE: SHOT 63 [FINAL] & 64 Version 04

With added cloth animation (the colour is just a substitue for now), I had to make the jumbo rig and bed a passive collider and apply an ncloth to the plane. After that, I used attached clusters on the blanket's vertexes where needed and moved them around to achieve the effect I wanted.

Added the guardian rig animation in shot 64, didn't realise until afterward that I had to parent his hands to the bike at some point! I ended up using locators to attach his hands to the bike handle and saddle.

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 92 [ROUGH] Version 02

I did a few tweaks to this rough, mostly on Fred because he seemed a bit too rigid - especially his arm, also if he drops the curtain in this shot it means I wouldn't have to make 2 backgrounds (one with the curtain limp and the other with him holding it) and it would be easier to animate him in shot 93 which I am also going to tweak (hopefully will be uploaded later).
For comparison, here's the original rough version of the shot: Shot 92 Version 01

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 96 [ROUGH]

This is a very rough version of Shot 96, it's been a while since I've done a walk cycle... I forgot that they're so simple and yet so difficult at the same time. I started animating Fred walking on the spot, then Helen - both of them walk in sync at 17 frames a step - and then Edith, who walks at 21 frames per step.
on the spot

moving them [test]
After I did that, I moved them - just to test if it works. I concluded from the quick test that it's best I inbetween the cycle before I move them along and that I may have to either quicken the walking pace, move the characters or add time for the couple to walk off camera and for Edith to walk to her destination (pass the photo booth).

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 93 [ROUGH]

I struggled with this shot at first, it's because I had her pivoting on the spot as she got up initially. It's only when someone pointed out that she should get up and then pivot, which made this shot a lot easier. Made me realise that actions can just be a simple, step-by-step process which doesn't over-complicate things!

Edith has some pretty neat catching skills
SHOT 93

I wasn't sure what to make the couple do, at the moment they're just blinking (I imagine in shock at seeing this old woman). I did play with the idea that Helen could reach her arms out a little when Edith looks like she's about to fall, but I'm still unsure of that.
so much white space

FOR TEAM VELOETOILE: SHOT 67 Version 03 & 68 Version 02

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SCENE 04 - SHOT 02 [ROUGH]

The green box is the substitution for the cam, same with the handbag. Edith is supposed to appear tired in this shot, and also slightly overwhelmed by the scale of the shopping mall - we may add a POV shot of the mall inbetween, just as she starts looking scared so we can see the scale of the mall.

FOR TEAM VELOETOILE: SHOT 66 Version 03

Splined and with facial/ hair animation! I did alter a lot since the blocked version, such as the timing which is now 232 frames instead of the original 139. It's a few seconds difference but it should be fine because it's set in the hospital as opposed to the racing/ action scenes in the other parts of the film.

The most difficult part was when he tries to sit up, I'm still not fully satisfied with it. It doesn't help that you can't tell if his elbows touch the bed or not (for weight), hopefully it'll make sense with shadows.

Shoulders on this rig go a bit funny when turned, I'm not sure if it might be my animation pushing the limits of the rig either so I'll have to wait till the shoulders are fixed.

The previous blocked shot is here: http://whey-an.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/for-team-veloetoile-shots-66-blocked.html

FOR TEAM COLOURLESS: SHOT 20 Version 04 [+ ball prop]

Added shadows (in the form of ovals) and made a proper ball prop. The ball was originally going to be one block colour, but we realised that without some kind of indicator then the viewer wouldn't notice the ball spinning. Didn't want to be too complicated, so I added some grass/ dirt stains.
SHOT 20 (Version 04)
The ball prop
The ball prop was created hastily in photoshop, but is easily replaceable on my animation because the ball is a symbol. So, if the director decides to alter the design all I have to do is import it into flash and it will replace the ball symbol (similar to referencing in maya but in flash!)

Saturday 11 April 2015

FOR TEAM COLOURLESS: SHOT 20 Version 02+03

After feedback from Hilary, backgrounds were changed so I had to alter my shots. This included shot 20, the first version I did with the previous background is here: http://whey-an.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/for-team-colourless-shot-20-block-pass.html

First of all, I re-positioned Bianca to the bench in the new background (drawn by Emma G).
Version 02
Since then, I have received more feedback on this shot so proceeded to alter a few things - such as her back being a bit more upright as she chases the ball :
Version 03

SHOT 20 (Version 03) with the BG
Also, we decided to scrap/ merge shot 21 with shot 20 because it was unnecessary.

Friday 10 April 2015

FOR TEAM VELOETOILE: SHOT 65 Version 03

Elbows were a bit funny with the new rig, so I made a few tweaks and then added the facial animation. I also lengthened it by 16 frames so that when he closes his eyes it doesn't seem so rushed.

Monday 6 April 2015

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SCENE 04 - SHOT 04 [ROUGH]

Don't have the background for this scene so I've scriggled green stuff in place of the bush, this shot is one of the new shots that were altered for scene 04 - so it has a different name (with scene 04 at the front of it)

Thursday 2 April 2015

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: BG60/ SHOT 93+96 [ROUGH]

A rough background for shots 93+96 - will polish it up after I've done my animation.

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: BG 48/ SHOT 80 [altered]

Realised that it would be strange to have the photo-booth curtain closed (which implies that someone is already in there) and have the couple walk toward a closed curtain. The sound of the curtain closing could be played during the next shot (shot 81), so we don't have to animate that
NEW BG48/ SHOT 80 - altered curtain + added chair inside the booth
original BG48/ SHOT80

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 81 [ROUGH]

Originally 44 frames (as set out in the production schedule), added 6 extra frames so she holds her smirk at the end. In the animatic, her face is turned to the side - I feel like there's no need because of the background perspective behind her:
which also means she's already facing couple, it's just the camera that she looks at at the end.

Wednesday 1 April 2015

FOR TEAM VELOETOILE: SHOTS 63 & 64 Version 03

Shots 63 and 64 now have facial animation, and also have been tweaked - for example, he is breathing in shot 63 (more evident that he is not dead).
SHOT 63
SHOT 64 - tweaked his head and neck, so it's clearer that he's looking at the bike; added a few more frames (for a longer hold when he lifts his arm up)
This playblast is from a duplicate camera I created of SHOT 64 and zoomed in so I could animate the facial features and see how it reads in shot 64's perspective. You can hardly see his face in shot 64's cam, but that might not be so on the big screen.

Sunday 29 March 2015

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 95 [ROUGH]

The green box is the photo-strip, and the purple thing is the bag!

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 70 [ROUGH]

This is only 32 frames, so I added writing because the loop looked funny. Because this is just over a second, I gave everyone minimal movement. I wasn't sure how to draw Edith with her face slumped on the poster so hopefully it fits in with the scenes before and after it, (I can always redraw if it doesn't fit). I'm having doubts about animating Fred's mouth; I wanted the couple to not draw attention away from Edith but also not be completely static.

FOR TEAM OLD LADY: SHOT 92 [ROUGH]

There's no voices but I tried to at least make it seem like they're having a conversation. I like to imagine Helen is telling a bad joke and Fred is laughing along, it would be funny if there were voices! Also, the red is a substitute for the photo booth curtain - I haven't drawn in Fred's hand (like in the animatic) because I think a crease to show that he's grabbed it should be fine.

FOR TEAM COLOURLESS: SHOT 39 Version 01 (+ SHOT 14 flipped)

SHOT 39

SHOT 14 - flipped the teddy around
Did shot 39 a while ago, had another go at it - it's a weird shot to stare at, sometimes it looks fine and sometimes not - I'll see if I change my mind...
Realised the teddy bear (in shot 14) is supposed to be facing the other way so I flipped it!
